Canticum - Sigtunastiftelsen
27.04 – 31.05.2024

Exhibition opening Saturday, 27th of April
Artist talk 14.30

In the suite of works exhibited at Sigtunastiftelsen, Erik Jeor has allowed himself to be guided by silence, towards a listening of painting. Wandering amidst Stockholm’s natural landscapes during the height of the pandemic gave rise to a new landscape imagery with soft, fresh hues of color. Here, the artist is met by the chastisement and liberation of the nordic seasons, with subtle sounds of ice, water and fauna. The paintings carry the ability to ‘record’ their surroundings and convey both their sound as well as silence. In them, silence becomes more than the absence of sound.

“Does an echo resonate from nature?” “Does joy linger from its melody?”

Colour is vital in the delicate process of dripping and brush strokes. It serves not just a mere tool at the artist's disposal, but is allowed to move freely and establish shapes across the foundation. The motif is heaven and earth. There is a deliberate intent behind the transition across places and states of being. The work explores not only our relationship with nature, but with faith as well. In Erik Jeor's painting, there is a desire to turn towards God and receive, wandering in nature and the act of painting. The landscapes catch the melancholia of our time, while the painting bears witness to a lasting and eternal beauty. Notes of a new song emerge out of deafening silence.

2023

18.09.2023 Commissioned by Vogue Scandinavia to portray the distinctly beautiful four seasons of our Nordic region, Erik Jeor welcomed the opportunity to capture nature in watercolour. Here, we get to know more about the artist in his studio

"I like to paint in a way so it not only allows you to revisit a place, but in the process of painting, a new place arises," Swedish artist Erik Jeor says from his basement studio in Stockholm. "It becomes a dialogue between the two."

The places captured in a series of paintings for Vogue Scandinavia, published in our April-May issue – depicting spring, summer, autumn and winter – are, in Jeor's "are free from exact locations" but certainly take inspiration from scenes in and around Stockholm, like the backdrop of Gisslingö's northern rock formation, the winding forest paths around Stensjön, or the southely outpost of the archipelago, Landsort.

Here, we join Jeor at his studio to get to know the artist, and see a glimpse of his watercolour works coming to life.
