Viola Tricolor — Mural on Svartensgatan 8
Upon invitation from Stockholm Konst Erik Jeor created a mural on Svartensgatan, Södermalm in Stockholm. For the work Viola Tricolor, the artist drew inspiration from 20th century didactic academic teaching boards, common in grade schools throughout Sweden in the early to mid-1900s. Erik Jeor's primary technique is watercolor on paper. Early in his practice he employed bright, romantic colors, often depicting abstract motifs. In recent years his approach shifted somewhat; the artist’s work has become increasingly figurative, relaying on nature as one of the primary sources of inspiration. Throughout his process, Jeor often experiments on paper, allowing for small amounts of water to reshape and create structure, allowing new color to arise during this process. All components form parts of their own artistic biotope, where the perspectives go from dizzyingly large to the extremely small and where the effect is often spiritual, mystical even.
For Viola Tricolor, Jeor created detailed images of flower petals, pistils and stems, preferably in a cross-section. He was attracted by Elsa Beskow’s heralded play on proportions throughout her literary canon. In her fairy tales, the forest and plants grow so large that they ultimately surround person, often diminutive in size, in an enchanted, however not completely kind world. In about the same, perhaps ambiguous way we experience the huge flora mural on the wall.
The mural is part of the Stockholm Konst series temporary commissions throughout the city. The first mural on Svartensgatan 8 was erected in 2022 as part of the city's Summer Exhibition.
